NICKEL SLAG

As IIPMC, we are proud to announce that we hold exclusive rights to more than 30 million tons of nickel slag, a byproduct obtained from the processing of nickel ore, previously managed by LLC «Murmansk Abrasive Plant» (LLC «MAP»). This substantial volume, located in the Murmansk port area of Russia, positions us as one of the leading suppliers of non-metallic materials for the industrial sector across Russia and the CIS countries. We are committed to leveraging these resources to meet the growing demands of our clients not only in these regions, but in others too.

ABOUT NICKEL SLAG

Nickel slag is a type of granulated slag. Nickel slag is an artificial material and is a byproduct formed during nickel production. The bulk density of the abrasive nickel slag sand is 1400-1800 kg/m³. The hardness of the abrasive is 6.0-6.5 on the Mohs scale (3rd, the highest strength class 6-10). In terms of hardness, nickel slag is comparable to materials such as silicon, granite, jadeite, and jasper. The chemical composition of nickel slag is multi-component. The main component of nickel slag is silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. It belongs to the group of glass-forming oxides. The high content of this component in the chemical composition of nickel slag (42-55%) determines its main physical properties: hardness and simultaneously glass-like brittleness. Thanks to the hardness of silicon dioxide, nickel slag has a high abrasive ability, which determines its main consumer value. Nickel slag is used as a consumable material where abrasive blasting cleaning is required. Nickel slag is environmentally safe. Nickel slag is insoluble in water and does not form toxic compounds in the air and water environments.

Applications

  • Cement and concrete
  • Abrasive ability
  • Filtering material
  • Reclamation and soil quality enhancement
  • Production of building materials

And obtaining concrete products with improved characteristics and resistance to corrosion. Additives are obtained by grinding the slag. Concrete based on it has better strength and resistance, which allows its use in the construction of hydroelectric power stations, subways, and dams. Moreover, the advantage of such cement is its lower price compared to other cement brands. It has a finer grind. The prolonged setting time, low initial strength gain, and low heat release allow for the creation of a uniform volume of cement stone. Cement with slag addition is also produced as rapid-hardening. It has greater strength than usual. Thus, the prospects for using such cement are enormous, and its application possibilities are constantly expanding. These slag qualities are widely used in road construction as a binding material, ensuring good load transfer to weaker subgroups.

Granulated nickel slag easily removes persistent contamination, mill scale, corrosion products through sandblasting. Nickel slag as an abrasive material for sandblasting is widely used in various fields: shipbuilding and ship repair, oil and gas industry, industrial construction, and metallurgy. Using these materials, high-quality surface treatment can be achieved, providing effective anti-corrosion protection for the object. We are ready to develop a project for a plant manufacturing abrasive material from slag and provide engineering services to launch such a plant "turnkey."

In particular, it is used in the process of purifying water for industrial needs in FOV filters. Slag serves as a suitable filtering medium for wastewater treatment with minimal maintenance, making it attractive for use as a septic system as well since it removes phosphorus from wastewater, minimizing environmental harm. When slag dissolves, it creates alkalinity that can be used to precipitate metals, sulfates, and excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) during wastewater treatment. Similarly, iron-rich slags are used as soil conditioners to restore soil pH balance and as sources of calcium and magnesium in fertilizers.

Thanks to its composition, slag is effectively used for the reclamation of abandoned industrial zones, coal mines, and other disturbed territories. It helps create a suitable base for a new soil layer and enhances its physical properties, including water permeability and aeration. Due to its content of microelements such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, slag can enhance soil fertility levels, making it useful for depleted or degraded lands. In conditions of high humidity, slag can be used to improve soil drainage, preventing waterlogging and root rots in plants.

  • The potential for creating new materials and products through synthetic stone casting based on blast furnace slag is significant. For example, reinforcing products made through synthetic stone casting with steel reinforcement enables the manufacture of large-scale products for construction. Combining slag melts and coarse slag can allow the creation of large blocks for foundations or ballast blocks for a variety of engineering and technical systems, including insulation materials such as slag wool, slag concrete blocks, road slabs, etc. Slags can also be used as structural additives in the manufacturing of roofing materials, construction materials, and structures, and in road construction, as iron-rich additives in cement plants, and as landfill cover material. The products are used in the manufacture of cements, concretes, plastics, building adhesives, construction ceramics, poured floors, slag wool, and as an alternative to proppants.
